Through the years, the main focus for assists has always been on the attacking midfielders and wingers to provide the assists – which is still the case! But as the game has developed a main focus has been fullbacks. Liverpool have been a prime example of this with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson.
My first focus will be the Liverpool right back! The England international has notched up 53 assists in the league in his 5 years (average 10.6 per season) in the Liverpool first team. Since then his role has developed, into a more advanced, inverted full back that sees him pick up positions, you would associate with a midfielder.
Furthermore, the improvement of Darwin Nunez will provide a more aerial threat in the box, meaning Trent’s crosses may return more goals than previous years.
Moving on to Bet365’s favourite, Kevin De Bruyne (7/4). The Belgium is a clear favourite and it’s not hard to see why. Only 2 of his 8 seasons has seen the fan’s favourite fail to achieve less than 10 assists in a 38 game season. Notching 16 assists in 32 league games last season (average of 1 assist every 2 games) is impressive, much to the help of goal machine Erling Haaland. Personally, I can’t see any differnce this season, although a lot of Manchester City’s 94 league goals were shared by the assisters – Grealish (7), Mahrez (10), Foden (5) along with many others.
Someone else who I believe could potentially thrive at their new club is James Maddison at Tottenham Hotspur. The England international was the only bright spark of a disappointing Leicester City team last campaign. 10 goals and 9 assists was a great return for a relegated side.
Now put him in a team that has wingers such as Son and Kulusevski running in behind along with 30 goal a season Harry Kane – I believe Maddison will have a great first season at Tottenham.
