Uruguay start their 2022 World Cup campaign against South Korea on Thursday afternoon. This is Uruguay’s 4th tournament in a row, having progressed through from the group stage in the previous 3. Expectations are growing for Uruguay to cause some upsets throughout the tournament, with a squad oozing with talent. With Real Madrid’s Fredrico Valverde and Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez, the two that if they hit the ground running, they will be a big part of any success Uruguay have in this tournament.
As for South Korea, this will be their 10th consecutive tournament but progressing through the group stage has been a stumbling block in previous tournaments having only achieved this twice. With star man Heung Min-Son a doubt for this one, with a facial injury, goals may be limited. Although, they will take great pride in boasting the best defensive record in their qualifying group, after only conceding 3 goals. After winning 7 out of their 10 qualifying games (D2, L1) confidence should be high for South Korea – with or without Heung Min-Son.
Talking of defensive records, Uruguay have only conceded twice in their previous 9 games at the World Cup. For me, Uruguay are the dark horses this year.
Uruguay will be too strong for South Korea in this one and I expect Luis Suarez and co to get 3 points on the board.
